Freeform is getting an early jump and has released the first trailer for its upcoming Cloak & Dagger series.

Scheduled to debut in 2018, Cloak & Dagger will follow the lives of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph), two teenagers who suddenly discover they have superpowers that are linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers while Tyrone has the power to engulf people in darkness. Due to the symbiotic relationship of their powers they will discover that they are better off sticking together, but that may also lead to growing feelings.

Marvel’s newest entry on the small screen

There is no word yet just how much Cloak & Dagger will establish themselves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for now it does appear they will occupy a small corner of it. In the closing shot of the trailer as Tyrone walks across the roof in his cloak you can see a sign for Roxxon. In the comics Roxxon is a corporation mixed up in numerous nefarious dealings. In the MCU it has been used a bit more as a generic name whenever a company needs to be mentioned.

What is also unclear from this short trailer is how the characters gain their powers. In the comics they were test subjects for a synthetic heroin and were the only two to survive, gaining their powers from the event. As the trailer didn’t show any labs, needles or anyone strapped to a gurney, my suspicion is the backstory has changed.

No firm premiere date has been announced as of yet for Cloak & Dagger beyond ‘Winter 2018.’
