clannad-top-5-seller

Most of the top sellers on Steam aren’t big surprises to anyone who pays attention to video games even a bit. Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and Rocket League are all in there. If you watch gaming, you’ve probably heard of Undertale, too. But Clannad? What the heck is that?

Clannad originally hit PCs in Japan in 2004. It’s a visual novel game. For the uninitiated, it’s basically an epic length Choose Your Own Adventure story with lots of lovingly rendered, mostly still images and an incredible amount of voice acting. Sometimes the goal of one of these games is to get a date, solve a mystery, or if you’re an adult, maybe even see the game’s characters in some rather explicit situations (this is not one of those).

Clannad was part of a Kickstarter campaign last year and went on sale this week with a slight discount from its $49.99 price tag.

What’s extraordinary though is that, at the time of this writing, Clannad is ranked fourth in Steam’s top seller list, just below Fallout 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops III, and above Grand Theft Auto V and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. When Siliconera initially caught the game’s meteoric rise, the game was ranked third above both Black Ops III and GTAV. Again, this is a 2004 visual novel game.

Clannad‘s Kickstarter pulled in $541,000 against a $140,000 goal, and is holding its own against those massive games, however temporarily, despite a $43 price tag. Sounds like the localization team did a pretty good job picking this project.
