Every year I look forward to spending five days in Las Vegas, roaming the hundreds of thousands of square feet of the Consumer Electronics Show. The anticipation of seeing all the innovative technological products from around the world usually sets in about October, and it’s the one time all year I am afforded the opportunity to meet other members of the press, new manufacturers and old friends.

Well, amongst the hundreds of great products I am able to fiddle with, there is always one product that stands out as a dud. This year my personal “Worst of Show” goes to “TV Hat”: A baseball cap that has a drop down curtain to put you in complete darkness while watching your video enabled device. You insert your iPod, iPhone or mp3 player and then lower the polycarbonate television screen to watch what the company calls “cinematic entertainment”.

The TV Hat website touts the benefits of the hat as fitting most mp3 players, great for the whole family, a virtual reality experience and a clear, glare free studio for photographers. The unit is available in hat or visor versions, and you get your choice of colors: Blue, camouflage, khaki, red or white. All this for a mere $29.95 plus $7.95 shipping and handling.

Now, besides the fact that this thing looks totally ridiculous and way overpriced, I just can’t see people using the, ummm, device. I mean you might as well put a sign on yourself that says “Rob Me Please”, because while wearing it, not only can you not see anything else but you have ear buds in your ears so you’re oblivious to your surroundings. Show me a subway car in New York, full of people wearing the TV Hat, and I will show you a subway car full of people missing their wallets.

The promo video on their website touts the fact that The Wall Street Journal said “TV Hat stands out from it’s peers at the Consumer Electronics Show”. They obviously took that statement as a compliment, but I can tell you, I have said in many a meeting, that my worst employee stood out amongst its peers, just not in a good way.

I am shocked that anyone would shell out $37.90 for this product. So TV Hat gets my “Worst of Show” and it wasn’t even close.
