Nintendo is giving you the chance to pay for the world’s best free video game once again! Cave Story+ will be available in a physical retail version this coming June 20 on the Nintendo Switch. This version contains all of the extra amenities released in the 2011 PC remaster that are not found in the original 2004 version of the game and much, much more!
Publisher Nicalis states that this latest port comes with an additional “seven play modes such as Wind Fortress and Boss Rush, more than twenty boss battles, fifteen levels, ten unique weapons, and four unique endings.”
You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you’re in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can’t remember his own name.
Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga!
Both the physical and digital versions of Cave Story+ will retail for $29.99.
Cave Story is amazing, but for $30?
Chances are you’ve picked up Cave Story by now, be it for free through the original 2004 release, the PC re-release, the Nintendo 3DS port, or wherever. It’s a classic that changed the way we look at game development while touching our hearts at the same time.
However, it’s also available for as low as $5 at times if not totally for free. $30 is a steep entry price for a single game that is available much cheaper through other platforms. Hopefully, Cave Story finds a new generation of gamers through the Switch, but I think the asking price is a little high on this one. If this is the last time I’ll ever have to buy Cave Story, I’ll consider it down the line.
