Now that the word is out on Netflix’s upcoming Castlevania series, fans around the globe have plenty of questions for producer Adi Shankar. He was happy to share a few tidbits with IGN in an interview that shows he won’t settle for second best.
Shankar, who is a self-described fan of Konami’s venerated series, claimed that he is aiming for the gold-standard of quality on today’s television, Game of Thrones, with his show. He goes so far as to say the show will be “R-rated as f***.”
This is very much Castlevania done in the vein of Game of Thrones. (Producer and writer) Warren Ellis added so much depth to the material. [The series is] going to be R-rated as f***. … this is going to be the best f*****g video game adaptation we’ve had to date.
If his show matches the level of his enthusiasm, I think I’m in love with the show already. Each season will reportedly have four half-hour episodes.
And they picked one of the best games to base it on
To show that he knows what he is talking about, Shankar also decided to tap into one of the franchise’s very best games for the adaptation. Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse has long been revered as the peak of the original 8-bit games, having some of NES’ best atmosphere and level designs.
In terms of storytelling, Castlevania III also has the most meat for Ellis to chew on. It stars four characters who will no doubt be given plenty of personality: the pirate Grant DaNasty, Dracula’s son Alucard, the witch and vampire hunter Sypha Belnades, and Trevor Belmont himself.
If Ellis puts his talents to full use, he’ll be able to dig deep into these troubled figures and deliver a vampire hunting story worth watching. Can’t wait!
