Captain Olimar and his veggie friends are making a return to the arena in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. This marks the second time the Pikmin series is represented in the playable character set.

As goes with his warped definition of sacrifice, Olimar once again calls on the Pikmin to carry out his deeds to the very bitter end, throwing themselves at the likes of Mario, Fox and Bowser with no hope of survival. Who would have thought such gruesome ideas could come from such a cartoonish Nintendo series?

None other than Kirby fits the Pikmin theme more. He really looks like something that would be an obstacle in Captain Olimar’s way on one of his far away planets.

With two Smash Bros. titles under their belts and Pikmin 3 being the first game in Nintendo’s relaunch of the Wii U library, could it possibly mean that Captain Olimar and the Pikmin have confirmed their long term stay on the grand Nintendo stage? They certainly seem like a welcome fit amongst friends despite being the youngest of the bunch.

Unless you count the Wii Fitness Trainer, that is. I wonder if Shigeru Miyamoto’s newest franchise will ever find its way into a Smash Bros. game, or at least be hinted at in this latest one.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, tentative title, will be available sometime in 2014, and more and more characters will slowly be announced with the passage of time.
