When we meet Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers (a.k.a. Captain Marvel) next year, we’ll find her at a difficult crossroads. On the planet of Hara living among an advanced alien race known as Kree—whose natives include Ronan (Lee Pace) and Korath (Djimon Hounsou)—she will struggle to find acceptance as an outsider.
She’ll also have to learn how to harness her newfound godlike powers, while balancing her human flaws. It’s these flaws that drive the Captain Marvel movie, according to a new Entertainment Weekly report.
“That is something that is really exciting to me about this film: We did not cut corners on that stuff,” Larson said. “Like, when it’s funny, it is funny, but also when there’s deep emotional things happening, it’s real.”
In addition to making Captain Marvel a character audiences can connect with, Marvel wanted to ensure her powers were well-represented on the big screen. That means when audiences see her head into battle next year, she’ll be the most powerful hero out there.
In the comics, when Carol Danvers takes over the mantle of Captain Marvel, she displays superhuman strength, energy projection and flight. The character who comes closest to matching her is Thor, who has become increasingly powerful over his last few appearances in the MCU.
Audiences will first see Captain Marvel use her powers when she battles a Skrull army when her solo movie hits theaters next March. Then, Captain Marvel will join the Avengers in Avengers 4. Given the current state of the MCU, her arrival couldn’t come at a better time.
Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
