The Captain Marvel origin story has been around for decades, but a recent move by Marvel Entertainment completely changes things and may have revealed important details about the movie’s plot.
With the fourth issue of The Life of Captain Marvel series by Margaret Stohl, Carlos Pacheco and Erica D’Urso, Marvel completely overhauled Captain Marvel’s origin story.
Originally Carol Danvers gains her superpowers by coming in contact with an alien device called the Psyche-Magnetron through an accident that connects to the original male Captain Marvel. The rebooted origin story ignores the connection with the original Captain Marvel and instead uses Carol’s mother to give her her superpowers. Her mother is part of the alien Kree race and gives Carol special powers at birth and the Psyche-Magnetron device activates her powers.
Interestingly enough, a machine that matches the Psyche-Magnetron’s description is seen in the first Captain Marvel trailer where Carol Danvers is tied down and has light beams shooting into her temples possibly brainwashing her.
We’re not sure if the big-screen take on Captain Marvel will borrow this storyline, but it is suspicious Marvel chose to change the character’s comic book origin story months before the movie comes out. This wouldn’t be the first time Marvel changed a superhero’s story to better match the MCU. It did so with Nick Fury after Samuel L. Jackson popularized the character in The Avengers.
If Marvel does the same with Captain Marvel, the change of her origin story would nicely match the female empowerment theme it is pushing with the movie.
Captain Marvel arrives in theaters March 8, 2019.
