I mean, is Square Enix really this insane!?
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Square Enix is going all out by touting the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Ultimate Box. The monstrous anthology box will contain a disc version of every game in the series, bringing the count to 22 discs, one disc each and four for Final Fantasy VII, VIII and XI. That’s a lot of gaming for 35,000 yen (roughly $450).
Square Enix will not be optimizing the games for the PlayStation 3, and it looks like a single convenient blu-ray is out of the question. Forgive me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t Nintendo squeezed all their anthology collections on a single Wii disc? Anyway, you’ll need a PlayStation 3 and a PSP to fully enjoy the package, and if your PlayStation 3 does not support backwards capabilities, then you’d better get that PlayStation 2 from the closet as well.
Not only that, but the games provided are not the best versions out there. Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II always go on sale on the iOS store. Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection just went on sale for the PSP, and the PlayStation version doesn’t have the excellent post game content the Game Boy Advance version has. Final Fantasy V‘s PlayStation translation is just horrible. The Final Fantasy VI port is infamous for really long loading times and lazy coding. Final Fantasy VII just had an enhanced release on Steam, and all three PlayStation games are cheap through PSN. Final Fantasy X is getting an HD port. And do you REALLY need a physical copy of Final Fantasy XI?
Essentially, what you’re paying for is a bulky box of out-dated ports, Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy XIII if you don’t have them already, and the PSP release of Final Fantasy III. This is one to trick a few extra dollars out of the super fans, but there are way better options than this.
The Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Ultimate Box is currently scheduled only in Japan.
