2015’s top trending gaming videos on YouTube

In our own little bubbles, it can be easy to over or underestimate how popular and ubiquitous a given game or cultural artifact is. Fallout 4 has been the center of many gamers’ lives since its announcement in June and release in November, for example, but it’s not the only game out there, nor is it the most viral despite some pretty awesome videos and mods.

YouTube revealed the most popular games and game videos from the year with some surprising results. In both categories, we have multiple appearances by the Five Nights at Freddy’s series of games. Grand Theft Auto V continues to be a source for popular content, including that awesome “Real GTA” video. E3 proved a source for some of the most popular videos of the year with teasers for Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront, and Final Fantasy VII Remake all charting. The number one video, by far, was that Clash of Clans commercial from the Super Bowl that featured Liam Neeson.

As for which games were the most popular overall, there are some surprises as well. Call of Duty: Black Ops III continues to be a dominant force in gaming, as does the internationally popular FIFA series. The presence of Until Dawn shows just what a sleeper hit the game was when it came out late this summer and how much word of mouth has done for it. The biggest surprise, though, is easily Agar.io, a web-based game that has players moving a blob around a map, consuming other blobs. Where the heck did that come from?
