Battlefield 3 will run on consoles at 30 frames per second, just like every other console entry in the Battlefield franchise from DICE and EA. News of that stat, and the game running in 720p, came last week from DICE developer Johan Anderson.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is being developed in part by Sledgehammer Games, a studio founded with some of the talent booted from EA after the original Dead Space. Sledgehammer's Co-Founder and General Manager, Glen Schofield, spoke with AusGamers about the final entry in the Modern Warfare trilogy. When asked about the competition and its new engine (read that as Battlefield 3 and Frostbite 2.0), Schofield had this to say:

I don't really know. I mean we really re-vamped this engine. We put a whole new audio system in and it is as competitive as anybody out there. You can go out and name your engine and call it whatever you want, right. You know, I've done that before; I've seen that trick and the bottom line is, this game will run at 60 frames a second. Not sure any of our competitors will.

Not sure I've seen any of our competitors on the console especially running at 60 frames a second and I'd be a little scared at this point — in June — if I was looking forward to a particular game that wasn't on the console and running at 60. And I think 60 is our competitive edge and you just don't throw that away…

…So I don't know what the future holds for the engine. But you don't ship an engine, you ship a game.

Battlefield 3 has been set up by DICE and EA as the Call of Duty killer. And while fans debate which franchise deserves the rights to their hard earned cash, I can personally attest to the friendly chiding that's come from DICE and its developers. During the few previews I've attended, there were several comparisons and jokes lobbed towards the Call of Duty franchise.

Are they warranted? I'll let you discuss that point, as you almost certainly will. One this is for sure, this fall marks one of the best showdowns between two military shooters that we've seen in a long time.

Which game will you pick?
