EA Sports has been sitting on a secret fighter for its EA Sports UFC mixed-martial arts games, but I didn’t expect anything nearly this cool. Martial arts legend Bruce Lee has been rendered into the video game and will be available to those who pre-order the title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
When asked why Bruce Lee was included in EA Sports UFC, Creative Director Brian Hayes called it “the most ridiculous question.”
“Why put Bruce Lee in a UFC game? It’s. Bruce. Lee…
You have the premier organization in the fastest growing sport in the world, the UFC; and the most iconic martial artist in the history of the world, Bruce Lee – a martial artist renowned for his philosophies that laid the groundwork for modern mixed martial arts. I can’t conceive of a universe where bringing these two things together doesn’t make sense. I know there are going to be countless fans that feel the exact same way and they will be eager play with such a legend in the UFC Octagon. I am one of them.”
EA has the full support of Bruce Lee Enterprises for his inclusion into EA Sports UFC, so as hard as they might try, gamers probably won’t be able to make something controversial out of this EA decision. I doubt that will stop them from trying, though. Bruce Lee Enterprises provided all the the reference videos and a life cast to create the 3D model “that gave [EA] a truly definitive three-dimensional reference that would prove to be the next best thing to having Bruce scanned.”
“When one thinks of Bruce Lee’s body what comes to mind is not a person, in the traditional sense, but rather a ‘super-human’ expression of coiled power, control and flexibility. Ridiculously shredded, broad cobra-hood back, tiny waist. Every muscle contracted, ready to spring into lethal action.”
I’ve seen a lot of fantasy martial-arts Bruce Lee games over the years, each more ridiculous than the last. This realistic take on the iconic fighter could very well turn out the be the best yet.
EA Sports UFC will be the first game licensed by the MMA league to be developed under EA’s banner. Generated characters will not be able to be shared between users, but they can still be used in online matches. It will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One using the Ignite Engine that EA has dedicated for its sport games.
