Bravely Second (1)

It's safe to say that most Square Enix fans are looking forward to Bravely Second. The first game scored a lot of praise for keeping true to classic Final Fantasy tropes and mechanics, making them more accessible for the modern age on the Nintendo 3DS.

Now comes the hard part: doing it all over again!

As a sequel, Bravely Second has to battle with two images that it has to live up to. On one hand, it has to be something delightfully "old" considering the franchise's reputation as a throwback to the classic days of JRPGs. And on the other hand, it has to improve upon the groundwork that the first game laid out, in effect, being something entirely "new!" Otherwise, what is the point? Just another Bravely Default game?

This isn't the AAA market we are dealing with here!

While the development team aims to pinpoint that target, it already has a demo available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in Japan. This is a bit bigger than the version I played at Tokyo Game Show 2014, and I still had a good time with that one. For your viewing pleasure, here it is in its entirety! 30 minutes of gameplay, but it would be a lot shorter if they sped up the battle animations! It's infuriating how slow "normal" speed looks after playing through the first game on fast-forward!

Bravely Second will be released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on April 23, 2015. No word yet on an English localization.
