Gearbox is working on a brand new franchise for the next-generation of consoles. Company boss Randy Pitchford confirmed the game on an episode of The Nerdist podcast, but did not provide any additional information.
Our guess is that Gearbox is gearing up for something that relies heavily on shooting. Its most popular series, Borderlands and Brothers in Arms, are both well regarded for their wide assortments of firepower.
However, the same can be said of the company's widely loathed games, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever.
Not a lot of companies have seen the highs and lows that Gearbox has over the last half a decade. After the overnight explosion of the Borderlands series established it as a grassroots success story, it is really struggling to shake off the stink of a few duds released later in the generation.
Only time remains to see which face of Gearbox emerges for the next generation of consoles. We hope its the bold and confident Borderlands Gearbox and not the finger-pointing blame-happy Aliens: Colonial Marines Gearbox we've been seeing as of late.
You've got this, guys. This is where you break free from the looming shadows of those unfortunate games and reestablish yourselves as one of the generation's biggest underdog success stories. We all want to see it, and I'm sure you do as well.
Pitchford also confirmed that more Borderlands 2 DLC is on the way.
