Surprise! The folks at Gearbox have gone and released the first DLC for Borderlands 2 a full week ahead of schedule. Originally planned for release next Tuesday, gamers will be able to fire up their copies of Borderlands 2 and download the Mechromancer DLC later this afternoon.

What is it? It's a fifth playable character. Gaige the Mechromancer is a young girl who sports a robot companion who she can call in for extra help during battle. It looks and sounds awesome. If you want to take a gander at her skill tree, you can do so here.

Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox, broke the news on Twitter earlier this morning. He did so across two separate tweets.

So – here's the surprise, Mechromancer for Borderlands 2 is ready about a week earlier than I promised. Oct 9, all platforms. Woo!

Should be available for download on all platforms by the end of the day. #GaigeFTW

Gaige will be free to those who pre-ordered their copy of Borderlands 2 and use the snazzy code they scored with their game. For folks who did not pre-order the game, Gaige the Mechromancer will cost you $9.99.

This marks the first foray into DLC for Borderlands 2. Based on what we saw with the original game, expect a few more big chunks of extra content from Gearbox in the coming month.

For now, will you be downloading the first batch?
