More bad news for BlackBerry, the price for its Z10 smartphone is being cut by carriers and retailers alike. The 4.2-inch handset is selling for as little as $49 from Best Buy and Amazon. Meanwhile, both AT&T and Verizon have slashed $100 off the price, and are now offering the Z10 for just $99 with a two-year contract.
Clearly the Z10 is underperforming. It’s no surprise, considering BlackBerry’s dismal first quarter earnings, that the company is struggling to move the device. Now it appears that smartphone sellers are doing whatever is necessary to clear their stocks before interest dries up completely. It’s also possible that these companies are simply clearing the way for newer BB10 devices, including the Q10, Q5 and even the upcoming A10 phablet.
The Z10 has been on the U.S. market since March 22, and while the Wall Street Journal claims the price cuts “suggest the phone isn’t selling well,” BlackBerry responded that the it’s simply “the right time to adjust the price,” in an official statement.
