Marvel Studios’ Black Panther was among five films nominated for the 2018 Golden Globe Best Picture (Drama) category.

The complete list of nominees was unveiled this morning and it saw the usual slate of prestige movies earn countless nominations, but somehow, a marquee blockbuster movie managed to sneak in.

Black Panther is the first major comic book movie to earn a nomination in the Best Picture category at the Golden Globes. It is joined by BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born. This tears down a wall that has long affected comic book movies as they were never considered to be serious films. It’s a big milestone, one that deserves ample recognition.

Black Panther also earned a second nomination for Best Original Song for Kendrick Lamar’s “All the Stars” featuring SZA.

With one major milestone in its belt, Black Panther will now set its sights on earning the highly coveted nomination for Best Picture at the Oscars. That’s not saying the movie will earn the nomination, but Disney has organized a big campaign to earn one of its most popular films of the year a nomination that would tear down the biggest wall yet for the comic book movie genre.
