BioShock. Has it had its day in the sun, or are we destined for more greatness in the future?

After becoming one of the most influential games of its day and cranking out two solid sequels, the future does not look good for 2K Games’ haunting first-person shooter series. Irrational Games, the studio behind the original, was disbanded following the release of follow-up BioShock Infinite, and BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin was hit with layoffs following the release of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

Since then, we’ve seen nothing. BioShock designer Ken Levine has been hiring again at a new studio under the umbrella of publisher Take-Two, but his new project will be an original franchise. As for BioShock, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick claimed at the MKM Partners Investor Day conference in New York, via Gamespot, that it is “unquestionably a permanent franchise.”

“The franchise is in the hands of 2K. They’ll make announcements in due time about any upcoming releases. But BioShock is unquestionably a permanent franchise for our company and one that we do believe in.”

I was originally not sold on the idea of BioShock sequels, thinking that it made a pretty good statement as a standalone experience. BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite were solid games, but they were both effective at proving sequels to perfectly balanced masterpieces could both be unnecessary and overly pretentious.

And I don’t even know if I want anymore BioShock games, honestly. Like all franchises out there, it’s just a name and that name doesn’t guarantee greatness. If we’re to dive into my JRPG brain, BioShock is a lot more like Chrono Trigger than it is Final Fantasy. It was a perfect game released at the perfect moment it needed to be with a loosely linked sequel or two, but it doesn’t have the lore or traditions to really expand into a “permanent series” with fifteen games.
