Possible Final Fantasy VII spoilers ahead.
Quick! Who’s you favorite Final Fantasy VII character? For me, it’s either Red XIII or Yuffie, but I’ve always had a fondness for the founding members of AVALANCHE: Biggs, Wedge and Jessie. Maybe it’s because I have a heart touched by the ice of Shiva, but I never got too choked up about Aeris’ death at the end of the first CD.
No, it was always this trio of fun characters that filled me with emotion after biting the dust way too soon. Seriously, these guys were a riot, had some neat designs, and sported plenty of room for exploring a backstory, but Square Enix killed them off before the first act of the game even closed out. What gives?! Each Final Fantasy game has their sidekick characters who come and go, but others get to hang around a lot longer than the amount of screen time these three got.
All three turned up in the recent gameplay trailer from PlayStation Experience, and they looked great. However, this intro isn’t all we’re going to be seeing of them. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Producer Yoshinori Kitase, Director Tetsuya Nomura, and Scenario Writer Kazushige Nojima all stated that they would like to explore the characters’ origins a bit more.
Maybe their deaths will be even more frustrating the second time around since we might have a bit more reason to care after actually getting to know them. They’re still going to die, but maybe all that lost potential will be able to work its way back into the script. And seriously Square Enix, what kind of mean writer do you have to be to have an entire city fall on your characters’ heads? That’s not nice at all.
Other bits from the interview include hints of the area around Midgar and development getting help from the Kingdom Hearts III team. The rest is information that they can’t yet share yet, like the number of episodes Final Fantasy VII Remake will have and the nature of connectivity features.
Final Fantasy VII Remake will “launch first” for the PlayStation 4.
