Big Boss’ private military group isn’t known as the Diamond Dogs just because Director Hideo Kojima has seen one too many cliche action movies from the 1980s. There is a reason to it in the new gameplay elements revealed this past weekend at Tokyo Game Show 2014. The mysterious lady assassin Quiet isn’t the only back-up Big Boss is going to be able to bring along on missions, because he also has an option to bring along man’s best friend.

While touring in Africa, Big Boss stumbles across a dead wolf with an orphaned cub nearby who takes a liking to the super soldier. He takes him back to the base, raises him, names him D.D. after the group, and trains him into becoming the fierce beast you see in the newest trailer. Much like his master, who is also missing an eye, the young pup covers a cross-shaped wound on his face with a similarly styled eye-patch.

I’m praying with every inch of my fiber that Kojima just runs away with the idea that this is how the two share a connection.

Yes, just like in Fable 2, Big Boss will be able to train a wolf companion and bring him on missions with the game’s Buddy System. Take down attacks and digging for buried treasure? We aren’t sure what he will do just yet, but I’m going to blindly believe that it’s just going to be awesome. The big question is who do you bring along in a pinch? A world class assassin wearing nothing but a bikini or a wolf wearing a freakin’ eye-patch!?

Either way, every last bit of reservations I’ve had about Metal Gear Solid V has vanished at this point. The game looks incredible, sure, but I’m also very happy to find that despite the dark turn Kojima has proposed for his series, he can still find a way to launch goats sky high with extraction parachutes and inject a wolf wearing an eye-patch into his story and get people excited. Not a lot of franchises can make that jump, retaining the same awkward humor in the face of torture and gruesome murder.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC in 2015.
