Because the dark wasn’t already scary enough, Krillbite Studio is hard at work on Among the Sleep, which they successfully kickstarted last May, a horror game in which you play as a two-year-old child.
Among the Sleep is the latest in a recent line of no-combat horror games like Amnesia and Outlast. Except this time instead of an old timey character or a journalist, you play the most vulnerable of vulnerable characters, a child. Running and hiding is your only option.
Unlike most first person games, Among the Sleep is modeling the entire body of the main character for two good reasons. The first is that your size and limited abilities are core components to the design of the game, but the second is that the game is apparently being built with Oculus Rift in mind, making that full body awareness more important than it might be in walking-turret games.
The art the team has shown in the trailer above and the gallery below is already looking awesome. The lighting reminds me of the weird, ethereal, waking dreaminess of a David Lynch movie, and in describing the game, Krillbite describes the game as being a mix of “the surrealistic theme of dreams and children’s imagination.” It’s hard to tell now if the threats are real or imagined, but regardless it looks like one of the scariest games out there.
An early alpha of Among the Sleep is available through the official site, already with Oculus Rift support, if you can’t wait to soil yourself.
