We’re a few days back on this one, but we hadn’t posted the story yet for you folks. This week we had the most recent and final Super Smash Bros.-specific presentation from Nintendo and, almost certainly, the last new characters and content. We already knew about Cloud, and he’s now available for purchase, but Nintendo had a few other bits to drop to make the show exciting, including two other new fighters and some amiibo news.
Most important among those is the addition of Bayonetta. Nintendo says that, of the characters it was possible for them to get, she was the number one rated character. Which means that the characters fans wanted to see were either too costly or simply not available for licensing. Bayonetta’s play looks impressively close to the rhythm she has in her own game, combining acrobatics and gunplay smoothly with witch powers. Her most famous power, Witch Time, is part of her repertoire, and it allows her to, as in the Bayonetta games, slow down enemies in her range so she can get in more attacks. Bayonetta is combo-heavy character, and just about every one of her big moves seems to be the start of a combo.
Alongside the character will come the Umbra Clock Tower stage, which has moving platforms and an alternate world.
Debuting with Bayonetta is Fire Emblem Fates’ protagonist, Corrin. Just like in that game, the character can be played as either male or female and can transform all or parts of his or her body to perform dragon-powered super moves. Because this is a Fire Emblem character, there won’t be a special stage, though the character’s game-specific music will accompany them.
Both of these characters will be available in February 2016. Bayonetta will be $5.99 on either Wii U or 3DS and $6.99 for both, while Corrin will be a dollar cheaper at $4.99 and $5.99 respectively.
Nintendo also has a bunch of Mii Fighter costumes on the way to accompany the ones already available, including most notably a costume of Geno from the classic RPG Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
A bunch of new amiibo are coming as well. Street Fighter‘s Ryu and Fire Emblem‘s Roy will get amiibo, while R.O.B. will get a Famicom-color version, and all three of these will hit on March 18. Coming later are amiibo for Cloud, Bayonetta, and Corrin, though those don’t yet have release dates.
If you missed the presentation and want to see it for yourself – including designer Masahiro Sakurai doing a sexy librarian look as he announces Bayonetta – the full presentation is available below.
