Somehow, against all odds, someone found a way to totally undercut the anticipation of the flood of games later this month, despite the franchises including Infamous, Metal Gear, Dark Souls and Titanfall, all of which have dedicated fan bases.
With their return to the Batman: Arkham series, Rocksteady has everyone talking, and they’re starting to give us some hints of what to expect with Batman: Arkham Knight. Director Sefton Hill and other members of the team have tons of good news for fans of the series in an interview in this month’s issue of Game Informer.
The team had a lot to say about the move from the previous generation to the new one, especially in relation to the Batmobile. The challenge wasn’t the decision to move to the new generation of consoles, but to get the best out of them.
“Because we were able to make that decision quite early, we were able to be more ambitious with the design and make a real, genuine next-gen game,” he says.
Gotham will be split into three islands and clock in at about five times the size of Arkham City. It’s no Grand Theft Auto V, but density is more important than vastness, says Hill. There won’t be any loading between indoor and outdoor environments, either.
Characters, too, should be more impressive – one character has a polygon count as high as that of the entire environment of Arkham City, and more than three times as many thugs can be active at once, with crowds as high as fifty people. That should make for some interesting challenge rooms.
The team talks also about how the Batmobile integrates into gameplay, how combat has changed, and which voice actors are returning. The other big reveal is the decision to skip multiplayer.
