The Banner Saga 2 is a great game. I reviewed it, and I really dug it. It improves upon the already tremendous original in a lot of ways, and it does so without feeling the need to reinvent itself in the process. It’s a pure continuation with constructive criticism acted upon.

The game is currently only available on the PC platforms. That will change this summer. Stoic Studio and Versus Evil announced the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release date for The Banner Saga 2 this morning by way of a press release. The game will hit those consoles on July 26, 2016.

The screenshots you see at the head of this post come from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Yep, still looks gorgeous.

The release included a quote from Steve Escalante, General Manager at Versus Evil.

“This sequel continues to build on the legacy Stoic has created with the Banner Saga. New players can jump right in and play without any concern of not playing the original game. We didn’t want anyone penalized if they were jumping into this story for the first time…However, the diehard fans who completed the first game will be able to continue their own saga based on all the choices they made in Banner Saga 1. The Stoic team has done an amazing job of ensuring this sequel is better than the first and addressed many comments their community had including improvements to combat, a wider variety of characters to play and interact with and the addition of more animations and cinematics…”

I don’t know, I’ll disagree with Escalante a bit there. Sure, Banner Saga 2 has a brief recap video and a little instruction once things get rolling. I suppose you could come in completely new and be alright. That said, the original game is a heavy ride, and you’ll feel a bit too light without playing it as you tackle the second. This is an emotional journey, and the backstory is a huge part of that.

Will you check out the console version of Banner Saga 2?
