Early backers of the Pebble Time are starting to receive the first units but, unfortunately, those who hope to use the smartwatch with an iPhone won’t have much of a smartwatch when it arrives. Pebble on Wednesday issued an update to Kickstarter backers, alerting them that Apple still hasn’t approved the Pebble Time for iOS app.

“The Pebble Time iPhone app, as we’ve all noticed, is not yet live on the iTunes AppStore,” Pebble said in its email to backers, including yours truly. “It remains “in review.” This unexpected circumstance pains us as much it does backers with watches ready to set up. We’re doing all we can to mitigate the delay and make Pebble Time Watch for iPhone available for download.

Pebble explained that it published the first version on May 18 and then tried to submit a newer version with bug fixes on May 22. That version, however, is still in review from Apple. Another update, version 2.6.6 of the Pebble iPhone app, has been in review from Apple for “43 days and counting,” the company said.

Pebble seems pretty desperate at this point — it’s asking folks to reach out to Apple on social networks — and you have to wonder if Apple is forcing the delay now that it has its own competitor, the Apple Watch, on the market. After all, it rejected another app for simply declaring support for the Pebble. We hope this is resolved sooner than later.
