When Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters next May, it will be the culmination of 16 movies in the MCU, ending with a climactic duel with Thanos. And this storyline will be that of a heist film, according to the Russo brothers, with Thanos attempting to steal the Infinity Stones.
We don’t know much about the plot of Infinity War except for the fact that there will be a ton of Marvel superheroes. In case you’re not familiar with the Infinity Stones, there are six that are scattered throughout the galaxy in the possession of different entities. This opened up the door to add elements of heist films into the movie, and the Russo brothers jumped at the bait.
In an interview with CNET, the Russos opened up about how they decided to add these elements of storytelling to Infinity War.
With “Infinity War,” the biggest new element to the movie is Thanos and the fact that he’s entering the storytelling in a very bold, strong way, to the degree that he’s almost one of the leads. We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past. The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, [and] that brought some inspiration.
Everything starts with Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones. He is the biggest new character in the movie, but we know very little about him. He’s only appeared a few times throughout the years. Turning his mission of taking the Infinity Stones and incorporating that into the storyline seems like a genius move on the part of the Russo brothers.
Heist movies are known for their energy and high-stakes plotting. This would really help reinvigorate the storytelling of the movie because when you’re 16 movies into a franchise, you need new ways to tell a compelling storyline. Marvel has adopted elements of other genres in the past, including the buddy comedy schtick in Guardians and now Thor: Ragnarok.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Russo brothers develop Thanos’ character to match beats with the other popular Marvel heroes we’ve grown to love.
Avengers: Infinity War will be in theaters May 4, 2018.
