Over the weekend, Disney held a celebration event in which it catered to its biggest fans, selling limited edition items and giving them a sneak peek at upcoming movies. In addition to showing off what's coming from its animation slate, the company also shared an exciting behind-the-scenes reel from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
But, by all accounts, it was the footage from Avengers: Infinity War that stole the show. The movie isn't expected to hit theaters until May 2018, but it appears to be shaping into one of Marvel's best movies yet.
According to multiple reports, including one from io9, the Infinity War footage "blows away even your wildest expectations."
I'll sum up what the reports are saying right here, but you can visit the source link for a more comprehensive breakdown.
When the footage starts, the Guardians of the Galaxy are seen flying around in space, avoiding debris and generally cracking wise. Suddenly, a body hits the Milano, so they bring it inside. Turns out, that body is Thor. When he wakes up, Thor is baffled by the Guardians, asking, "Who the hell are you guys?"
(Not sure how Thor wound up in space or if that's a minor spoiler for Thor: Ragnarok.)
Thor and the Guardians fly to another distant planet only to find it in tatters—all of this apparently foreshadows the destruction being wrought by Thanos in his quest to take over the universe.
The footage begins cutting between the different Avengers; Scarlett Witch is seen flexing her powers, while Peter Parker appears to develop his Spidey senses, with the hair on his arm standing up. Iron Man then talks about the imminent arrival of Thanos.
Then some pretty cool observations, per io9:
A fight begins. Doctor Strange is putting down platforms and Star-Lord is jumping off them, shooting his guns. Cut to Spider-Man, in his new suit revealed at the end of Homecoming, jumping through the air. A shot of Vision behind bars. A shot of a Wakandan army which includes Bucky. Captain America comes out of shadows with a full beard. Black Widow is shown with blonde hair. Iron Man has new, very sleek armor. Someone is using the Hulkbuster armor. Just a huge montage of shots.
As the fighting continues, Thanos allegedly grabs a moon (not Earth's moon) and starts dragging it toward a planet the Avengers are on. But before we see what happens, the footage ends abruptly. All the while, Thanos is in possession of the Infinity gauntlet, though he apparently only has two stones at this point.
With Comic-Con set to kick off this week, hopefully Marvel will let the masses check out the teaser in all its glory. For now, check out all of the Avengers who assembled at the D23 over the weekend.
