What do Avengers 4 and Back to the Future have in common? According to comments from Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed, the disparate movies both feature time travel.

In a new interview, Reed heavily implies that the post-credits scene in the Ant-Man sequel will play a major part of Avengers 4. If true, audiences can expect the remaining Avengers to travel back in time, potentially in search of the Infinity Stones.

“Based on the science that we’ve set up in the first movie and [Ant-Man and the Wasp], I won’t rule out the possibility,” Reed said. “Because, again, we are dealing with a time vortex. That could happen.”

That’s certainly not a confirmation, but considering the set pictures that have leaked and the numerous theories since the release of Avengers: Infinity War, it’s a foregone conclusion Avengers 4 will feature elements of time travel. We won’t see Tony Stark retrofit a DeLorean with a Flux Capacitor, but the idea is the same.

In the post-credits scene in Ant-Man and the Wasp, Janet van Dyne warns Ant-Man not to get sucked into a time vortex. That wasn’t just an idle warning. Marvel likely threw that line in there as foreshadowing for Avengers 4.

It’s unclear how the Avengers will figure out how to use the time vortex to their advantage. But it appears the team will at least travel back to the Chitauri invasion of New York, back when Loki was a maniac.

If the Avengers are able to successfully travel through time and collect the Infinity Stones, they could wield an Infinity Gauntlet of their own and undo the damage done by Thanos.

We’ll find out when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
