Captain America’s role in Avengers 4 will wrap everything up, actor Chris Evans ominously said in a recent interview. Now, the directors of the upcoming movie are also chiming in on Cap’s fate, confirming he’ll have a much bigger part to play in the next installment.
Possible spoilers ahead
In a commentary track on the home release of Avengers: Infinity War, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely talked about their plans for the character, saying Captain America has a “big story” in Avengers 4.
“We have a unique opportunity here,” Markus said. “There are certainly other movies that have done it, but we know we have two movies to tell character arcs. Some characters are going to be better served in the second story.”
Although Cap played a significant part in Avengers: Infinity War, he didn’t have that much screen time. But since he survived the snap from Thanos that eliminated half the universe, he’ll play a major part in undoing the damage.
Unfortunately, his part could have a sad ending—as if the events of Avengers: Infinity War weren’t traumatic enough. If the numerous theories about the character come true, Cap will meet his maker in Avengers 4, ending one the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more tragic arcs.
Add to the fact that Chris Evans’ contract with Marvel ends after Avengers 4, and all signs point to Captain America’s death. No doubt, if that does come to pass, one would expect the writers to give him a noble send-off. Could he make the ultimate sacrifice?
We’ll find out when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
