Over the past ten years, Captain America has been a major focus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, after going underground following the events of Captain America: Civil War, the first avenger hardly featured in Avengers: Infinity War. That’s going to change in Avengers 4, as audiences get to know a version of Captain America with a “much harder edge.”

In a video released by Wired, the directors of Avengers 4 talk about the characters set to feature in the upcoming movie, and confirm that Captain America (along with Black Widow and Falcon) is set to evolve in a way audiences haven’t seen. When you are being hunted by your government and then see half the universe disappear, you’re bound to be changed.

It’s unclear what the directors mean about a “much harder edge,” but we could see Cap act first and ask questions later. Perhaps we’ll see him further rebel against his government. Captain America is typically seen as very black and white, but we could be introduced to a character who is more morally ambiguous. Hopefully, that means Cap will be back to his ass-kicking ways.

Could his harder edge also result in his death? That’s a popular theory floating around right now. After all, actor Chris Evans has only one movie left on his contract with Marvel. Going out in a blaze of glory could be the perfect way to conclude the story of the more hardened Cap.

Avengers 4 is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
