HTC First Review-Front

Do we have another Kin on our hands? The HTC First – a phone that puts Facebook front and center to a user's experience, launched less than a month ago on AT&T for $99 with a new two-year contract. It's now available for $0.99, which suggests that sales haven't been very good and AT&T wants to rid itself of the device. Go figure, too, since you can install a similar experience on several other handsets for free.

The failure is somewhat surprising because the First is a decent device once you close out Facebook Home and enter a pure Android experience. It offers a really nice form factor with a manageable 720p 4.3-inch screen, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, solid battery life, a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor and up to 16GB of storage. AT&T's first attempt to offer a phone with a Facebook-focus was called the Status and, that too, didn't sell very well. Perhaps Facebook-centric phones just aren't meant to be.
