Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devl Saga

Atlus continues poking us with sticks by teasing even more PlayStation 2 Classic releases for its seminal Shin Megami Tensei series. Don’t be such a cad, Atlus!

Following the highly anticipated release of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne on the PlayStation 3 this week, which Atlus teased beforehand, the company sent out a newsletter to its subscribers with a message at the bottom not so subtly hinting that more was indeed on the way.

“Is that it? Are there more PS2 classics to come? It’s getting hot in here with all these SMT releases…”

Over the last month, we have seen three PlayStation 2 games in the Shin Megami Tensei series be released for the PlayStation 3. The aforementioned Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne launched just this past week, but we also have seen a release both the immensely popular Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 and the lesser known, but longer titled, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army.

How many more titles could the PlayStation 2 possibly have to re-release? I’m so glad you asked! As it stands now, we still have three more releases to go.

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army has one direct sequel released really late in the PlayStation 2’s lifetime called Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon. It was released deep into 2009 and is probably the last significant PlayStation 2 release in America. You can understand why only really die-hard fans might have even heard of it.

After that, Atlus also has Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga and Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2. This sub-series remained only on the PlayStation 2 and tells self-contained stories unlike anything else the series has ever seen. Despite its departures from traditions, fans still love these games for their brisk pace and liberal usage of Shin Megami Tensei lore.

If I was to bet, I would guess that these two will be released first and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon will close out the series PlayStation 2 Classics run just like it did for the actual PlayStation 2.

If Atlus gets its timing right, all might be available once Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 5 is released for the PlayStation 3 before the end of this year.
