We’ve tried all manner of smart watches, from the zany Orsto X3 to Motorola’s exciting Moto 360. But we haven’t yet found that killer device, one that stands out as the clear king of the wearable market. Will it be the Apple Watch, or any other array of Android Wear devices? The answer to that is still unclear, though the ASUS ZenWatch is making a good case as one of the best smart watches out there.

It’s not the smallest wearable on the market, and the bezels are a bit of an eyesore. But don’t let that completely take away from the ZenWatch’s otherwise graceful design. The subtly curved body is fairly thin, fitting a robust 360mAh battery and a lovely little AMOLED display. At $199, the price is on a par with other options on the market, and it does what you’d expect an Android Wear device to do.

There’s an entire lineup of Android Wear devices, and they all essentially perform/act the same way. So your choice will ultimately come down to price and design. To that end, the ZenWatch definitely warrants consideration. There’s a handy companion app for security features, watch face backgrounds and other useful settings; you can even use it as a camera remote for your phone of choice, though third party apps allow you to do that with other options, too.

Editor’s Note: Correction, an early version noted there was no heart rate sensor, in fact there is one, it is just not visible.  You can check your heart rate by stating “OK Google, What is my heart rate?”

The ZenWatch will track your activity as well as your heart rate. It’s also IP55 water-resistant, so it’ll withstand a quick bike ride in the rain. Other specs found in the ZenWatch include a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, 4GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM, a 9-axis sensor and a bio-sensor.

Do you need a smart watch? Maybe not, or maybe it’s exactly what you’ve been waiting for. If so, the ZenWatch is something to consider. Check out the above video to see it in action, and stay tuned for more coverage down the road.
