Along with all the nightmare-causing graphical glitches and game-breaking bugs in last year’s Assassin’s Creed Unity, one complaint came out of the decision to make all the multiplayer characters in the game’s cooperative mode male. The decision came out of game’s structure – every player was playing as the protagonist, Arno – but some choice words from the game’s technical director made it sound like Ubisoft was cheapening out and didn’t want to do the extra work. When news about Assassin’s Creed Syndicate came out, then, people assumed with good reason that the choice to have two characters, one male, one female, was a response to the blowup.

Syndicate‘s creative director, Marc-Alexis Côté, says that’s not the case.

“We’ve been so focused on building this game the way we want with those two characters. It’s not done to pay lip-service, it’s done to build a great game,” he said in an interview with GameSpot.

The dual protagonists are a way for the team to make the game feel new and fresh.

“That’s where we came up with the idea of having two protagonists, which evolved into having twin protagonists, and a brother/sister relationship we’ve never explored – that started two and a half years ago.”

In other words, Evie existed in some form or another before Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was on shelves.
