Day one patches for games have been getting pretty big. I wrote in spring of 2014 about the problem, and we’ve seen some pretty wild patches since then. Ubisoft seems to be trying to buck a lot of recent trends with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate though, massive patches among them. The game will sport a patch of just over 500 MB on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, compared to the game’s respective 43 and 40GB downloads on each platform.

500MB doesn’t exactly fit on a floppy disk, but it accounts for about 1 percent of the game’s overall size. For comparison, here are some recent patches, day one and otherwise, that games have seen:

  • The Witcher 3 recently had a 15 GB patch preceding the Hearts of Stone expansion.
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 received a day one patch bigger than the game’s original install.
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection had players downloading 20GB on day one.
  • Batman: Arkham Knight required a 3.5 GB download.

500MB isn’t too bad, comparatively. Gamers in outlying regions that don’t have access to good broadband will still feel the pain, but it’ll be less a weekend and more an afternoon. Those with broadband in cities, on the other hand, will barely feel it. Ubisoft has had more confidence with Syndicate than they ever did with Unity, dropping unnecessary features and touting those that actually make a difference, rather than the city just being big. These all feel like good signs, though we’ll know when reviews hit in just a couple days.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate releases for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this Friday, Oct, 23, and hits PC a month later on Nov. 19.
