We all know Assassin’s Creed as one of the banner series of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 generation. Few games exemplify the increasingly realistic graphics and quickly-growing open worlds like that series.

But what if the series had gotten its start about eight years earlier? Maybe around 1998? YouTuber 98Demake looks to answer exactly that question with their take on the historical stabbing simulator

Yeah, that looks about right

Not every game on PlayStation 1 looked bad like this does, but while a few games remain fun and playable, most games were pretty ugly and very forgettable. Assassin’s Creed‘s consistent jankiness and uneven story throughout the years makes me think that it might not have survived if it’d hit during the PlayStation 1 days.

With Assassin’s Creed Origins just over the horizon, it’s fun to look back at both the series as it was and as we remember it. And as it could’ve been, in a slightly different timeline.

Assassin’s Creed Origins releases on October 27 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
