Last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins was a great game in its own right, and easily my favorite game in the series since Assassin’s Creed II. One of my favorite parts about it, though, was that Ubisoft had let the series lie fallow the year before, giving some extra space after the previous title, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. It looks like Ubisoft is planning to do that again in 2019. After Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches in October, we won’t get a new game until at least 2020.
Ubisoft has been showing off bits and pieces of Odyssey since just before E3, unveiling new trailers and info right up through this week’s Gamescom show. Speaking at the show, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained that we got Origins and Odyssey so close together because the two games were being developed in tandem.
“On Assassin’s, we had a game [last year] and we have one this year,” Guillemot explained to Gamespot. “But we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year. It’s just because the teams were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other.”
“What you’ll have is lots of content coming on [Odyssey],” Guillemot said in response to questions about spin-offs or Assassin’s Creed Chronicles-style titles. “The team really wants to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years.”
Guillemot said that the time between Syndicate and Odyssey gave the team more freedom and got a good response from players, suggesting that it’s been worth it from a publishing perspective as well to give the series some breathing room.
What do you bet we’re getting Watch Dogs 3 in 2019? I’d put money on it.
In the meantime, we can look forward to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey hitting shelves on October 5 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. You’ll be able to kick dudes This-Is-Sparta-style until your thumb hurts and the pit’s full.
