Ubisoft has taken criticisms of its Assassin's Creed franchise in stride, making adjustments with each sequel, sub-sequel, and DLC pack they put out. Assassin's Creed III is poised to be the best the series has seen yet, but despite the amazing overhaul in just about every area of the game, one criticism most gamers have from the original still lingers on: Desmond.
Assassin's Creed's lead protagonist has the charisma of a mannequin, and his storyline often gets overshadowed by the far more interesting historical locations and characters he inhabits. However, Ubisoft still keeps bringing this tree stump back into every game for the ridiculous sci-fi twist overarching the entire series. What's wrong with just having cool games about a 2000 year long secret war is beyond me, but Ubisoft can't really backtrack on the character's pointless existence this far into the plot.
Luckily, Creative Lead Alex Hutchinson agrees.
"It's more like The Twilight Zone. There's always a guy introducing it and he's there every episode, but each game completes its own story. Assassin's Creed 1 was Altair's story. Ezio has been and gone. You can engage with these historical stories individually without having to necessarily understand Desmond's story. But yes, we eventually do have to wrap it up."
Hutchinson believes that Assassin's Creed III has moved far beyond what the original developers had in mind. Assassin's Creed III is as close to new IP as it could have gotten, so maybe it is time to move beyond the character.
"Without Desmond, we could have called it anything else, and people would have said okay. It's just we like the wrapper of being an assassin and being in this continuing war against Templars. There's huge value in that. But [AC3] is 90% a new game."
Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, being developed for the PlayStation Vita, will be the first Assassin's Creed game to star a female assassin. The game is confirmed to be Desmond-free, so perhaps they are trying to slowly edge the character out and hopefully the whole science fiction twist as well.
Assassin's Creed III will be released on October 30th for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The Wii U version remains TBA. Over the weekend, Ubisoft announced a subscription based "Season Pass" would be available to gamers who want cheaper DLC.
