September 24 marked the end of the fourth fiscal quarter, so Apple is announcing earnings results in a forthcoming conference call for investors on October 18. The company updated its Investor web page and set up a URL to post the conference call webcast.

Nothing out of the ordinary here, but the timing does snap things into perspective. The “things” I’m talking about has to do with the next iPhone (4S or 5, depending on which rumors you’re following).

Originally, the new iPhone was rumored to be released this month, but at this point, all eyes are peeled for an Apple media event expected for October 4th. That would jibe with Apple rumors zeroing in on an early to mid-October timeframe — and actually turn the earnings call into an opportunity for Apple to announce initial sales of its hotly anticipated new handset.

Last quarter, Apple boasted record revenue of $28.57 billion (spanning sales of 20.34 million iPhones, 9.25 million iPads, and 3.95 million Mac computers) and a record quarterly net profit of $7.31 billion, along with huge growth in China ($3.8 billion revenue) during that quarter. In terms of new numbers, all will be revealed at 2:00pm PT/5:00pm ET on October 18, 2011 — presumably well after we’ve sufficiently seen and chewed over the new Apple smartphone.
