Apple took the wraps off three new iPhone models yesterday: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. Each now boasts fast-charging, which is great news for Apple fans, but there is a big catch.
Apple claims fast charging support for its new iPhone models will give users a 50-percent charge in just 30 minutes. But to unlock fast charging, you’ll need a USB-C to Lightning cable and compatible power brick. And in true Apple fashion, it isn’t including either in the box, according to 9to5Mac.
The regular USB-A lightning capable and 5W wall adapter that’s included in the box won’t unleash the fast charging capabilities. That doesn’t come as a surprise. After all, Apple loves making its customers buy more cables and power bricks.
So how much will it cost make your new iPhone fast charge-capable? Apple sells a USB-C to Lightning cable for $25 on its site and the cheapest 29W power brick for $49.99. That’s an extra $75 if you want to take advantage of the technology.
Come on, Apple.
Apple doesn’t specify on its site if its 29W charger will be able to deliver the fast charging capability, so there’s the off chance the price may be higher. Owning Apple products has never been cheap, and that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon.
