Apple recently announced that it sold 52.2 million iPhones during the second quarter of 2018. With the figure nailed down, research firms IDC and Strategy Analytics say Apple actually gained some market share.

In the smartphone market share space, Apple has long trailed Android manufacturers. Things haven’t changed this year, with Samsung taking the crown for most smartphones shipped during the second quarter of 2018 with 78.2 million.

Apple’s 52.2 million iPhones during last quarter placed it second, and signified a 2.8-percent increase over the same quarter last year when it shipped 50.8 million iPhones. The unexpected growth by Apple came amidst Samsung’s release of the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.

The increase is very small, but growth of any kind is a good thing. Overall, Apple’s 15.6-percent market share pales in comparison to the 84.4-percent share Android manufacturers enjoy. Apple gets the last laugh though, occupying upwards of 80-percent of smartphone profits in any given quarter.

Rounding out the top five were Huawei with 11.9-percent (39.3 million), Xiaomi with 8.4-percent (28 million) and Oppo with 7.1-percent (23.9 million).
