Apple is now selling unlocked iPads in Japan, which means customers can now purchase iPads with Wi-Fi + cellular connectivity without the need to choose a specific carrier, or worry about which carrier they are able to take it to later.

The news was first published by 9to5Mac, which says that interested parties can buy the unlocked iPads in Apple Store locations or online.

The major benefit to an unlocked iPad is the ability to swap SIM cards on the fly.  So, in Japan for example, if NTT DoCoMo, Au or SoftBank aren't working out, you can opt to choose a different carrier. Also, during travel to another country you can simply pick up a local SIM card for data and use your iPad without paying roaming fees.
