Nest Thermostat 2nd Generation

Apple has removed the Google-owned Nest thermostat from its online and physical retail stores. The move comes after the Cupertino company began stocking the latest Ecobee 3 thermostat with HomeKit compatibility earlier this month.

After the Nest disappeared from Apple's retail outlets in early July, the company this week confirmed to Mashable that it had been pulled — without explaining why. But it makes sense that Apple would want to support devices that work with its own platforms and services.

Google's Nest is not compatible with HomeKit, and with Brillo, the search giant's own Internet of Things platform, coming this fall, it's unlikely the device ever will. The Nest still works with iOS devices using the dedicated Nest application, though.

Apple often removes products from its retail stores, and it seems to be becoming more common as the company reduces the number of third-party products offered in its retail stores. It recently removed fitness trackers from Nike and Jawbone shortly before launching Apple Watch.

However, Jawbone trackers returned to the Apple Store in June, so we shouldn't rule out the Nest's return at some point. If Google was to make its device HomeKit-compatible, Apple would surely reconsider its decision.

In the meantime, you can buy Nest from Google and other retailers.
