Apple is still the king of the U.S. smartphone market, according to new data published by Counterpoint Research this week. The firm tracked smartphone shipments during the first quarter of this year across the four major U.S. wireless carriers including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. It found that, while Samsung is still the leader in terms of all handset sales, which includes sales of both smartphones and feature phones, Apple is still the dominant player in the smartphone market.

iPhone shipments on AT&T and Verizon accounted for more than half of all smartphone shipments on both carriers. The story was a bit different on T-Mobile and Sprint, however. Sales of the iPhone made up 24 percent of all shipments on T-Mobile while Samsung sales grabbed a greater 38 percent share of shipments. On Sprint, Samsung had a 30 percent share of all smartphone shipments while Apple had a 36 percent grasp.

Combined, Apple and Samsung have more than two thirds of the U.S. smartphone market, Counterpoint Research said. In total, smartphones now represent 87 percent of all phone shipments in the U.S.

Another compelling tidbit from the report: Counterpoint Research argues that T-Mobile is “now the third largest smartphone carrier in terms of smartphone volumes” and overtook Sprint and all of its MVNO businesses. Hit the source for the full report.
