Apple - iPad 5 Event - Retail - iPhone Launch - 068

Apple on Tuesday unveiled the top iOS apps of 2013, and there's a wonderfully mixed bag of games, social networking and productivity applications making up the top ten lists. There are some small surprises included on the paid side of the equation, but in the free market, apps such as Snapchat, Vine and Google Maps were among the most popular. Candy Crush Saga, an insanely addictive puzzle game that came out late last year, took the top spot in the free iPhone apps. Minecraft, which has been downloaded millions of times, took the number one spot for paid iPhone apps, besting offerings such as Heads Up!, Temple Run: Oz and Angry Birds Star Wars.

The free list is notable because of the ongoing social networking battle between Vine (number four), Snapchat (number six) and Instagram (number seven). Each of the three apps has grown immensely throughout the year as smartphone ownership continues to rise. Instagram recently added video and private messaging to its app, while Snapchat has slowly added features over the past few months. Vine, on the other hand, has largely remained the same, though it's still obviously popular even with Instagram introducing a video component.

Pandora Radio, surprisingly, grabbed the number nine spot among the top ten, hanging in there despite Apple releasing a similar service called iTunes Radio with iOS 7. Also notable is the popularity of Google Maps and YouTube, which were both exiled from the iOS ecosystem following the introduction of iOS 6; seeing Youtube come in at number two is pretty impressive considering the roster. Twitter, Draw Something, Skype and Pinterest all failed to secure a top ten spot. But, again, given the apps that made the top ten, competition is fiercer than it's ever been, so companies will definitely need to continue to iterate in order to attract new and returning users.

Apple chose Duolingo as its top iPhone app of the year, with VSCO Cam and Endless Alphabet as runners-up, while Ridiculous Fishing grabbed Game of the Year honors. Disney Animated was Apple's App of the Year for the iPad, while Badland was Game of the Year for the Cupertino company's slate. Check out the full list below:
