Starbucks already offers its own app with built-in mobile payments, but pretty soon you'll be able to use Apple Pay at the coffee chain too. The Cupertino company also announced plans to bring the service to KFC and Chili's starting in 2016.

Apple Pay chief Jennifer Bailey broke the news this week at Re/code's Code/Mobile conference, noting the mobile payment service is doing particularly well at fast food locations. "We're seeing a lot of support for quick-service restaurants with a need for fast payment," she said.

Apple has been expanding its mobile payment service steadily since it first launched last year. The company's come up against some new competition, including Google's rebranded Android Pay and Samsung Pay, the latter of which doesn't require a special NFC terminal to work.

This latest announcement should help Cupertino stay ahead of the pack, though Starbucks, KFC and Chili's may eventually support Apple Pay rivals as well.
