Apple has made a big change to its App Store gifting policy that now allows you to gift in-app purchases to friends and family. First reported by MacRumors, the change backtracks on the previous stance that only apps could be gifted, but not any content within the app.
Apple’s gifting guidelines now states: “Apps may enable gifting items that are eligible for in-app purchase to others. Such gifts may only be refunded to the original purchaser and may not be exchanged.”
App developers will no doubt appreciate Apple’s change of heart as it opens up a big source of revenue. Purchasing apps has slowly been phased out by most app developers in favor of in-app purchases. The biggest game of the year, Fortnite, gained a massive following partly because the game is free, with a business model that focuses on making money with in-app purchases.
Now you can gift these in-app purchases much to the joy of avid Fortnite players everywhere.
It’s not entirely clear how this new system of gifting in-app purchases will work. Previously, the process was fairly simple as it just involved selecting and gifting an app.
