Apple dismissed over 200 employees from its autonomous vehicle project it has been working on for years according to CNBC.

Project Titan, as the project is known internally, was the genesis of Apple’s entry into manufacturing vehicles. Early reports on the project suggested Apple had ambitions to build its own car from the ground up with a big focus on autonomous driving. However, somewhere along the way Apple ran into unforeseen issues and scaled back the project though it still continued development on autonomous technology. Project Titan isn’t cancelled yet, it’s just going to run with a much smaller team.

Apple acknowledge the playoffs in a statement to CNBC.

“We have an incredibly talented team working on autonomous systems and associated technologies at Apple. As the team focuses their work on several key areas of 2019, so groups are being moved to projects in other parts of the company, where they will be support machine learning and other initiatives, across all of Apple. We continue to believe there is a huge opportunity with autonomous systems, that Apple has unique capabilities to contribute, and that this is the most ambitious machine learning project ever.”

This is the first major update from Apple we’ve received on Project Titan. Unfortunately, it’s not a positive one. It’ll be interesting to see what Apple will do with its autonomous technology moving forward.
