June has become the traditional time period for Apple to launch their Back to School promotions, but unlike in previous years where you got an iPod for free, or a significant amount of credit towards a more expensive one, this year the company is taking a very different tact.
Starting today and running through Sept. 20th, 2011, if you purchase any qualifying Mac computer, you’ll get a $100 gift card (75 Euros in Europe or 65 British Pounds) that can be used in the Mac App Store, iTunes Store or the iBookstore. While not as potentially sexy as a shiny new iPod, it could turn out to be a lot more helpful to those going off to college in the fall. You could pick up some of the required reading material for an English Lit class in the bookstore, or you could download Pages for writing your papers with or get yourself some sweet games for your iOS device to relax in-between classes with.
As we said, it may not look as attractive as a free iPod on the surface of the offer, but when you think about it, it is actually probably the more enticing deal. When you think about the sheer number of iPods out there in the world, is there really anyone going off to school that doesn’t already have some sort of music player? Whether it be an Apple branded product or a smartphone of another breed, pretty much everyone has some form of digital music player, so Apple needed to come up with something else to get people interested in going with their computers for the fall.
To qualify for the $100 gift card you need to meet one of the following requirements:
- College students or students accepted to college
- Parents buying for college students or students accepted to college
- Faculty or staff members at any grade level
On a side note, does anyone else find it odd Twitter is shown twice in the promo picture? The iOS icon is there as well as a chalk outline flying away. Add in the deep integration of the service into iOS 5 and Apple is showing a whole lot of love for that company as of late. Just one of those random things you notice.
