Apple didn’t miss taking a shot at Google during its WWDC 2018 keynote. When discussing the what’s new for iOS, the company knocked its rival for still not figuring out how to combat Android fragmentation all these years later. The latest version of Android is on a meager number of devices in the world despite Google coming up with a bunch of ideas to solve the problem.
The breakdown between the two is, as you can imagine, quite significant given Apple’s ability to manage both hardware and software. Google’s always been at a disadvantage because the company relies on its partners to issue upgrades at their own pace.
While there is 81 percent of iOS devices that have made it to iOS 11, just 6 percent of Android devices are on Oreo. Android 8.0 Oreo, by the way, was released ten months ago. Treble is the current solution, but it’s not required to be implemented unless Oreo is running out of the box.
Craig Federighi, who leads software development for the Cupertino-based company, also announced an incredible customer satisfaction rate for iOS 11 (95 percent).
Google does have more than 2 billion Android devices active today, but the vast majority of them are on outdated software. Most Android devices are on Nougat and Marshmallow. Those two versions arrived in 2016 and 2015, respectively.
We’ll see in the coming months if Treble moves the needle for Google and Android, but until then Apple is dominating by moving iOS devices from as far back as 2013 to new versions.
